Monthly Article

During this holiday season, NAWBO Broward/Palm Beach members have so much to celebrate. Women-owned businesses keep growing, and more women are heeding the call to entrepreneurship. As NAWBO sisters, we keep supporting each other, whether it be spreading the word of a new product or service, celebrating a business or personal win, or offering thoughtful and helpful advice to a member seeking guidance.

As we gather together for our annual holiday party, (ugly sweater encouraged but optional!), there will be a lot of laughter, a lot of sharing, and a lot of joy, because that’s what NAWBO is all about. As we celebrated with our NAWBO Miami sisters at their holiday party last week, we discussed how important it is to join together at as many meetings and events as we can. When we do, we feel energized, when we don’t we feel slightly off-kilter. The camaraderie is like an endorphin and that is why we spread the word about NAWBO.

This year, as part of our commitment to giving back to our community, we will welcome Mary Hart, Executive Director of Dress for Success of the Palm Beaches. Dress for Success is an incredible organization dedicated to empowering women and breaking the cycle of poverty once and for all. They offer professional attire to help their clients secure meaningful employment, and so much more. They also offer support before and after the interview with a job preparation course and mentoring program. Since opening their doors in 2010, the Palm Beach Chapter of Dress for Success has helped over 5000 women.

Mary will be collecting donations of very specific items needed by the organization at our December 13th meeting. Those items are:

  • Brown or black professional purses
  • Shoes (pumps and flats)
  • Mascara (new)
  • Stud earrings

Please bring one or more of these items if you can to support this great nonprofit.

Member Spotlight

Jane Snell-Simpson joined NAWBO 12 years ago and has been an active and engaged member ever since. As the owner of JS-1 Construction and a licensed general contractor, her business has grown and evolved over the last decade, and NAWBO has been with her through it all. She values the strong relationships she has built as well as the meaningful business advice she has received and continues to receive.

Jane's company has now found a challenging and satisfying niche as certified Aging-In-Place specialists, helping individuals and families build and retrofit their homes so they can live independently for as long as possible. These smarter and safer residences are not only life-changing for those who live in them, but also for family members who care for and worry about their loved ones.

When Jane first joined NAWBO, she was impressed with membership being so willing to help her in the areas of business where she wasn’t as strong. Their experience, advice, and positive attitude made all the difference to her and her business. As a matter of fact, Jane credits her NAWBO sisters with building her business confidence, ensuring her sustainability, and influencing her personal development. They have been with her during good times and bad, celebrating wins, and commiserating during losses. They are truly sisters.

Jane has been on the Board for several years since she joined NAWBO, first as Programming Chair and most recently as Public Policy Chair. She spends many hours putting together the yearly Public Policy meeting in October and keeping the Chapter up to date on news that impacts members and their businesses. NAWBO’s commitment to advocacy is something that has always impressed Jane, and this commitment has helped her be a better advocate for herself, her clients, her business, and her fellow business owners.

When she first started her business, Jane heard a lot of good advice, but what stuck with her was the importance of a team. She is still building her business dream team – one that values performance, integrity, and accountability – but her NAWBO team has her back in the meantime.

Jane is very active in her community. She is part of the advisory board for Community of Caring Center of Palm Beach whose mission is to create a healthier community through nutrition education, social services, and economic development programs. Their Senior Caregiving Program delivers fresh fruits and vegetables to over 300 frail and elderly people over the age of 70 over age 70 dealing with hunger, chronic diseases, and isolation.

If she weren’t running JS-1 Construction, Jane would still be in construction, working as a project manager on commercial building projects. Now whether she’d be in South Florida is another story. She’d prefer to be on an island in the Caribbean if possible – but for now, she is just fine where she is!
